1. Parque Eduardo VII & Liberty avenue
Eduardo VII Park is a public park in Lisbon, Portugal. The park occupies an area of 26 hectares (64 acres) to the north of Avenida da Liberdade and Marquis of Pombal Square in Lisbon's city center. The largest Portuguese flag in the world is usually flown at the park's northern end.
2. Alfama – the old area of Lisbon
The oldest and most traditional neighbourhood in Lisbon, with cobbled lanes and alleys and steep, gruelling inclines, should be discovered little by little, stopping frequently to savour the view, atmosphere and authentic spirit of the oldest side of the capital. Take a deep breath and start to climb the hill that will reveal one of the best views of the city.
3. Castle of St. George
Saint George's Castle can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Its oldest parts date from the 6th century, when it was fortified by the Romans, Visigoths, and eventually the Moors. It served as a royal Moorish residence, until Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, captured it in 1147 with the help of northern European crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. It was later dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of England, commemorating the Anglo-Portuguese pact dating from 1371, and became the royal palace until another one (that was destroyed in the Great Earthquake) was built in today's Comercio Square.
4.Viewpoint of Santa Luzia
This serene viewpoint introduces visitors to Lisbon’s Old Town, the Alfama. It’s a landscaped terrace and one of the city’s most romantic spots, found next to the Church of St. Lucy (“Santa Luzia”), which is the headquarters of the Order of Malta in Portugal. Outside, on the church’s southern wall, are two tile panels: one shows downtown Lisbon before its destruction by the 1755 earthquake, and the other illustrates the Crusaders storming the castle in 1147, after a 5-month siege.
5. Church and viewpoint of Santa Graça
Up on the hill above São Vincente de Fora Monastery is the residential Graça district, reached by tram 28.
By Graça Church (one of the city's oldest, built in 1271 with a Baroque interior and 17th-century tile panels) is Miradouro da Graça, a splendid terrace offering a panoramic view of the castle and central Lisbon.
The open-air café and its relaxing atmosphere is a favorite of young locals, especially in late afternoon. During the summer it remains open well into the night.
6. Viewpoint of Senhora do Monte
The “Viewpoint of the Lady of the Mount” is at the top of Lisbon’s tallest hill. The name derives from a glass-encased image of the Virgin that stands in front of a charming white chapel dedicated to St. Gens, a bishop martyred in Roman times.
7. Rossio Square
Rossio is the liveliest square in the city, where people stop to sit and relax, or for a drink at the several atmospheric cafés with outdoor sitting (the most popular is the art-deco "Cafe Nicola" on the western side). On either side of the square are two baroque fountains, and in the center is a monument measuring 27 meters in height. It consists of a pedestal with marble allegories of Justice, Wisdom, Strength, and Moderation, qualities attributed to Dom Pedro IV, whose statue stands on top of the monument.
8. Comerce Square
This vast waterfront square, also known as Terreiro do Paço or "the palace's square," is where the royal palace stood for over two centuries until 1755, when its was destroyed by the Great Earthquake. The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belém, and the new arcaded buildings acted as the port of entry to the city.
9. Monument of discoverties
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) stands 170 Ft (52 m) tall. This stunning monument was designed to commemorate the Age of Discoveries in Portugal. It was inaugurated in 1960, on the fifth centenary of one of the country’s great discoverers, Prince Henry the Navigator, who discovered the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde.
The views of the monument and the city’s western neighborhoods are impressive, but the most beautiful view is a marble mosaic at the foot of the Monument that represents a compass, with a world map in the center.
10. Tower of Belém
Built in the sixteenth century to guard the entrance to the harbour, Belém Tower is one of the city’s architectural wonders, and a UNESCO-listed monument. It was used as a State prison for several centuries, and today is a symbol of the Portuguese capital.
11. Monastery of Jeronymos
The Jerónimos Monastery was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.This notable 16th century work of architecture became part of Portuguese identity and culture.
A notable work of architecture, it became part of Portuguese identity and culture.
